The ending of apartheid was one of the great political and human achievements of the 20th century. It has presented South Africans and their global partners with the opportunity of building a new, just and vibrant society.

But these very citizens are burdened with the baneful heritage of economic under-development, racial inequality and especially educational deprivation. Most of the teachers in South Africa today were schooled in the intentionally sub-standard system of Bantu Education; fed with straw, they are asked to serve a rich and healthy diet to today’s students.

The project dreams of an integrated campus with space for the care of the handicapped, a full-scale school of the highest quality, and a sporting centre in support of the holistic development of children, with space eventually for a cultural centre, medical facilities and care of the elderly; all this without abandoning the needs of the old suburban periphery with its social and educational needs.

St Martin’s School and its predecessor institution, St Peter’s, have been working for quality non-racial education in Johannesburg for a century; the Lusito Association has been championing the inclusion of marginalised children, especially the handicapped, in the same area. The two speak the same language.

These two moral forces have now joined hands to launch a fresh initiative in the burgeoning south of the city, while simultaneously re-conceptualising their response to the needs of the existing but declining urban centres they have known for years. To this end, the ChristianAlliance Education Association Trust (CAEAT) was formed and a multi-faceted educational upliftment project was born.

How we do it

VISION

Our Southern Cross

Our Vision is to contribute to the transformation of South Africa through educational upliftment.

MISSION

Our Driving Force

In South Africa, a country fraught by a painful, unequal past, but with a potentially bright future, we want to invest in people. Being acutely aware of educational, social and financial poverty, we see the crucial need to build people up, sustainably, on all levels – intellectually, morally and socially. Our objective is to use this new campus of educational, recreational and communal excellence as the vehicle through which we transform lives.

We are passionate and determined in our goal to provide world-class education. Our aim is to continue drawing children from a wide spectrum of mental and physical capabilities into the formal education process, giving each one the opportunity to maximize their potential and prepare for a role in advancing the future of our country.

While this plan focuses on the new campus, the parties have deep roots in the old and degenerating part of the south of Johannesburg and are conscious of responsibility to its people. Our involvement needs to be re-conceptualised with input from local government and other role players, so the existing facilities can be re-purposed either as part of the ongoing educational mission or in other ways. The partners take this deeply seriously and would hope to bring this initiative within the scope of the present overall plan; but it is not the primary focus of this document.

Our Approach

SUSTAINABILITY

Our focus is to give a hand-up, to truly empower people in order to bring about sustainable transformation through education, skills and community development, and solid infrastructure that will pave the way to success. St Martin’s and Lusito have an impeccable track record of receiving, channelling and using funds in the most appropriate and effective ways for the benefit of those they serve. CAEAT’s ring-fenced and well-managed Trust Fund will ensure that the campus’s viability is safeguarded in the long-term

Our Approach

COLLABORATION

The CAEAT is intrinsically collaborative, with Lusito and St Martin’s as joint beneficiaries, and we want this to filter down into everything we do. We want to work with and alongside students and the community, growing together for the future of our country. Within the context of a powerful generational shift nation-wide after the first democratic elections in 1994, the project will help move people from socio-economic stagnation and poverty to an empowered society capable of shaping its own destiny. Moreover, we see every person involved in the project, as a valued and integral part of this collaboration. This is a great opportunity for investors to ‘co-labour’ with us in making this project a reality and bringing about real change.
